The Lost Battalion

The Lost Battalion tells the story of the most dramatic event during one of the bloodiest weeks of World War I.  Major Charles Whittlesey led a group of Brooklyn toughs and western farm boys into the forbidding Argonne Forest.  Although Whittlesey would break through the German defenses, he found himself and his men surrounded and cut off.  They hung on day after day while the world waited to hear if they would survive.  Damon Runyon, one of America's most beloved sports-writers, would pick up on their story and make them reluctant celebrities. The story of the Lost Battalion lives on as one of the great tales of war and the price soldiers pay.
